Structured cabling is the part of your IT that you only think about when it fails, and by then it is expensive to fix. It is buried in walls, ceilings and risers, it is invisible to the people who use it, and it is where cut corners hide most easily. If you are commissioning a new office, a campus or a factory network in Kenya, the cabling is the one layer you cannot easily redo. This article sets out what to demand from any contractor before they pull a single cable.
Why cabling is where contractors cut corners
The active equipment on a network, the switches and access points, is visible and easy to verify. The passive layer, the cable and connectors, is not. Once it is behind the wall, nobody can see whether the right grade of cable was used, whether it was terminated properly, or whether every run was tested. That invisibility is exactly why a cheap contractor saves money there, and exactly why those savings come back as intermittent faults, slow links and finger-pointing for years afterwards.
The standards to insist on
You do not need to be an engineer to hold a contractor to professional standards. Put these requirements in writing before work starts:
- The right cable grade for the job. Cat6A is the sensible standard for new enterprise installations today; it supports 10-gigabit speeds and gives you headroom for years. Insist on knowing exactly what grade is being installed, and that it is genuine, not counterfeit cable bought to hit a price.
- Certification testing on every drop. This is the single most important demand. Every cable run should be tested with a professional cable certifier, such as a Fluke DSX-5000, and you should receive the test results. This proves each link actually performs to standard rather than merely “having connectivity”.
- Manufacturer warranty. Properly installed and certified cabling can carry a manufacturer warranty, often 20 years or more. A contractor who cannot offer this is telling you something about their installation quality.
- As-built documentation. You should receive labelled drawings showing every cable, port and patch panel. Without it, the next person who works on your network is guessing, and you are locked into whoever installed it.
- Proper containment and labelling. Trunking, conduit and clearly labelled patch panels are not cosmetic; they make every future change faster, safer and cheaper.
The test certificate is non-negotiable
If you remember one thing from this article, remember this: no test certificates, no sign-off, no final payment. A contractor who has certified every drop will hand the results over without hesitation. One who resists, or offers to “send them later”, is usually one who never tested properly in the first place. The certificates are your proof, your warranty basis, and your protection.
Cabling and active equipment are one job, not two
The most common procurement mistake is treating the cabling and the network electronics as separate contracts awarded to separate vendors. When they are split, faults fall into the gap between them and each blames the other.
